Tim Berners-Lee, un scientifique britannique du CERN, a inventé le World Wide Web (WWW) en 1989. À l’origine, le Web a été conçu et développé pour répondre à la demande de partage automatique d’informations entre scientifiques des universités et instituts du monde entier.
Le premier site Web au CERN - et dans le monde - était dédié au projet World Wide Web lui-même et était hébergé sur l'ordinateur NeXT de Berners-Lee. Le site Web décrit les caractéristiques de base du Web; comment accéder aux documents d'autres personnes et comment configurer votre propre serveur. La machine NeXT - le serveur Web d'origine - est toujours au CERN. Dans le cadre du projet de restauration du premier site Web, le CERN a réintégré en 2013 le premier site Web mondial à son adresse d'origine.

Le 30 avril 1993, le CERN a placé le logiciel World Wide Web dans le domaine public. Le CERN a mis à disposition la prochaine version avec une licence ouverte, un moyen plus sûr de maximiser sa diffusion. Grâce à ces actions, rendant le logiciel requis pour exécuter un serveur Web librement disponible, avec un navigateur de base et une bibliothèque de code, le Web a été autorisé à prospérer.
